Background Information
The goal of this lesson is for students to connect what they learned in the Plants Unit to trees in their community. To accomplish this, students pick a tree in their school yard or community and measure the diameter of its canopy. They use an empirically derived equation to estimate the amount of carbon sequestered by the tree in a year. They compare this to the amount of carbon emitted by the average car per year and discuss the possibility of offsetting car emissions with trees.
